Shane Reed, Tehachapi City Council, and the Arts

Sparks's picture

Shane Reed for City Council

I met Shane Reed at Mama Hillybeans the other day.  He said, he wanted to help the artists in Tehachapi.  We talked about more funding for the arts, art promotion, and education for the children in Tehachapi about the arts.  He is very excited about the Beekay Theatre, and sees a great future for artists, writers, and musicians in Tehachapi.   Sure, we talked of other things, but you all know how I feel about the arts, literature and music, and Shane was more than willing to chat with me about it, thus, I invited him over to Grunge Hobbit to hear the needs of artists from all of you.  Not sure he will come, but I did invite him.

Shane seemed to care deeply about Tehachapi, and he said he has learned a lot about how to serve us.  I can't believe he has lived here since he was a young boy and now has two children of his own. Heck, I never stayed in one place for more than a year or two, until I moved here.

I don't know, I think some young blood will stir up the pot a bit. I enjoyed talking to him, he has a huge heart, and when he talked of Tehachapi, his eyes would light up and he smiled.   Too flipping CUTE. lol

There is no doubt in my mind that he loves Tehachapi.   What I like most about him is that he doesn't seem to have his own agenda, and there wasn't a large ego present in his drive to help Tehachapi.  This is a huge plus in my book... I can't stand egomaniacs.  He asked questions about what the residents of Tehachapi want/need.   He talked of Tehachapi's children, our senior citizens, and about non-profit organizations with great interest.  I too have a great interest in non-profit orgs, as some of you know, especially Tehachapi's humane society and many other animal rescues.

Aahhh...  I could go on and on, but I won't.  lol

Careful Sparks

This seems to be tipping over into Politics, and many of the Readers of Grunge Hobbit appreciate the lack of politics and religion here. So be careful.

Art & Politics

I don't see a problem with posting local politics on this site since it is inevitable that the TN, The Loop and Bako will be covering this subject in their blogs/papers too.  Who we vote for in this election is important in many ways.  If Shane interests in the arts are present, this will be a factor in my vote.  Hand who is all for promoting music in Tehachapi (an issue close to my heart) is not running for another term which saddens me greatly.  I am one Tehachapi musician that will follow this thread closely.

FYI

I do live in the city and expect to vote for Shane. And I hope it was clear, that I want people to be careful with any political posts. And we might, as a Tehachapi Special Intrest Group, encourage people to find out the positions of all the canidates with regards to the Arts in Tehachapi and post it here. But let's not let this turn into the stuff people hate about political blogs.

Sparks Shane The Pain is

Sparks Shane The Pain is already a member of this blog.  He is listed under Bloggers.  He hasn't posted anything   I guess you beat him to the punch, or your moderator scared him off.

I can't vote either, I live outside the city limits.  Interesting site you all have here, I'm glad I found it.

Mathnerd, A Blog site that

Mathnerd, A Blog site that censors their content?  That's rare.

Being an artist  (from Lancaster), freedom of expression is what I have fought for my entire life.  You want to stifle conversations about politics and religion on a artist blog?  Not as many people hate debates about politics and religion as you seem to think.

Blogs that become the most popular on the internet are the ones that allow freedom of expression.  Take a look at your own Tehachapi News Blog.  What is it you don't you talk about on that blog?

It's diversity, truthfulness, and differences of opinion that lure people to blogs, whether some people bitch about it or not, open forums such as blogs work in attracting many viewers, this is why blogs are such a popular internet tool today.  I'm sure the owners of the Tehachapi News Blog are tickled pink to have so many debates about politics and religion as they have had.  If you want more people to view the artwork of your local artists in Tehachapi, you can't scare off potential viewers by way of censorship.   All this being said while assuming the point of this blog is to attract visitors in order to exhibit the artwork of your local artists.

You have an informative site here Mathnerde.  Looking at the IDs of your visitors and Bloggers, I can see aprox. 75% of them come from the TN blog.  Same people, different expectations?

I'm not from the TN blog.  I

I'm not from the TN blog.  I post here sometimes because you don't have to register.  I like that about this blog.  Anything that affects tje aarts is good to have here.  When you find the other candidates websites or information. please post here too.  thank you.

Shane, I understand it isn't

Shane, I understand it isn't the job of the city to establish a Boys and Girls club.  It would be nice if one of the abandoned buildings in town could be donated for use to these types of organizations.  We need more for our children to do here in Tehachapi to keep them out of trouble.  The Beekay is for the performing arts. That is a done deal.  A building for the children to hang in, learn about the arts, culture, educational games and fieldtrips to learn about Tehachapi history and nature.  We have a senior center that needs more art & game supplies too.  Non-profit organization donations have taken a dive.

This is for Chamber of Commerce:  Sparks mentioned something about Mountain Festival in another post:  Where were the Tehachapi artists?   How do the Tehachapi artists afford to participate in the biggest event Tehachapi has every year?  Promoting the artists in Tehachapi is a must.

I think this may have been

I think this may have been covered in a recent news article, but I forget what it said... What's with the old school by Central Park?  Was there some reason that it couldn't be converted into a community center?  It's a shame- it would be perfect.

I'm all for local people running for office posting their opinions on changes they want to make in regards to the community on here.  As long as it doesn't get mired down in bitterness like the TN blog does.  Ugh!

I am here!

I am here. I am at work right now and will post when I get home.

Rocket Scientist Weighs In

I think this thread has been a great example of the power of positive blogging. This has been a really great debate about the direction of the Grungehobbit community. I can understand Mathnerde's concerns that the community not lose its focus on the arts as well as Thomas Jacobson's view that censorship is not a very artistic way of being.  I hope that we will be able to create a community where all aspects of life can be thoughtfully  and respectfully pondered while maintaining our focus on the artful aspects of living in Tehachapi. Having seen the way this thread evolved, the prospects for such a community look pretty bright to me. Thanks to everyone for sharing their art and their opinions. Heck, I may even register :)

Here we go.

Hello everyone.
I would like to thank Sparks for inviting me. I will try to respond to your political questions without getting too political. LOL  I respect your concerns about your site turning into a Tehachapi News type blog. That site had a lot to offer before some bad apples got hold of it. I don’t think you guys have the type of personalities to let that happen to your site. As Sparks has stated I have a website up and running. On that site I talk about a few of the issues concerning Tehachapi. I spent the first day uploading some issues that I have been misquoted on and have not put in the time to upload some things that I support. I will do that soon. I have two children and activities for them are important to me. I responded to a question not too long ago on the TN site about the City owning a lot of buildings in town. I stated on that site that I would like to put them to good use. One use would be to allow non-profits that benefit us, our children and seniors to use them at City cost. One of these building is across the street from Tompkins School, others are near Dennison Rd where our older kids and seniors are located.  I have not come out and said it on my site but I do support the arts. I have a relative that is active in the Tehachapi arts community and he got my 1st yard sign. He also has my ear whenever he needs it.  Please take a look at my site and e-mail me with any questions you may have. Shane93561@hotmail.com
My site is at www.dshanereed.com
Mr. Tripp’s site is www.tripp4council.org  Most of you may be asking why I would post my competitors website up here, well I think his site speaks for itself and I am sure you guys are smart voters. Grimes and Henry do not have sites that I know of.
Have a goodnight and thanks for your time!

Plays & Works Well With Others....

I wonder how many politicians "flunked" that part of kindergarten?

I like the use of the word "competitor" instead of "rival". Competitors can work together, rivals are against each other.

Greatblog you have here

Greatblog you have here Sparks.  You are all over the place. I just came from a site you designed for the Tehachapi Humane Society.  I like this one best so far.  Any other sites you have that I should be aware of?.

Back to the reason I am here:

I have a soft spot in my heart for Shane because my husband works for KCFD, as does Shane.  Shane is a good man and he loves Tehachapi.  I know what Grimes can do, I was hoping to find more information on Tripp.   I see Shane posted that information here. iim browsing the Music section, Tripp will have to wait. How long has this site been up and why don't you advertise it in the paper?

Shane. It wasn't politics or religion that turned the TN into a circus, we had incredible conversations about religion and politics back in the day. I learned a lot from the blogs. Problem is TN no longer moderates it. They did at first (when we all liked bloggin there).  All personal attackers were warned, it was three strikes, YOU"RE OUT>t.   This only lasted for the first year or so. They haven't had a moderator in years, not enough time they say.  Now they fight about everything, even what food they should eat.  lol   The TN doesn't care. Their blog is making them money, I think someone said over a 1,000 people go there every single day to read the blogs.   I guess it's become Tehachapi's Jerry Springer show.  lol

You may want to get a moderator Sparks!

Hi,

My name is Shane Reed, the same as yours. I am 9 1/2 years old and am in the fourth grade in Neptune Beach Elementary School in Jacksonville, Florida. I was working on the computer and decided to see if there was anybody else named Shane Reed, when I found you. I think it's really cool that you are running for office and I wish you the best of luck. I hope you will let me know how you do in the election. I would vote for you if I could..
Sincerely,
Shane Reed

His his mommy or daddy wrote

His his mommy or daddy wrote this for him.  I don't know many 9 year olds that can spell this well.   I have yet to find anyone with the same name as I have. Newana Zan.  I would vote for you if I could Shane.  I live in Portland so that isn't a possibilty.  I was looking for information on Lord of the Rings and ended up here.  Nice surprise!

Good luck to you,

I'm not an artist. I like

I'm not an artist. I like looking at art. I like to read the local news.  I read the Tehachapi news webpage They don't have any information there on the election.  I do not blog there.  I am reading the Loop here now.  This is my first blog. I figure all the candidates running are interested in the arts,  Grimes, Henry and Tripp.  I'm an old man but I am willing to vote on someone young and fresh to conjure up new ideals and keep the old folks on their toes.
