Marc Irving Weber Wednesdays at Don Juan's Latin Grill

As part of their Wine Down Wednesday event, Don Juan's Latin Grill will be presenting composer and guitarist Marc Irving Weber every week from 6 to 9 pm.

Dr. Weber has a Bachelor of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music, a Master of Music from Yale School of Music, and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He has written for orchestra, band, mixed ensembles, choirs, and a variety of solo instruments over the years.

Now back in California, where he was born and raised, Marc has been focusing on performing. He plays throughout Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Kern Counties; in Santa Clarita at both Persia Restaurant and the Egg Plantation, in Oak View at Om Fusion of Thai, in Ojai at Farmer and Cook, in Pasadena at Sitar Indian Cuisine, in Tehachapi at Don Juan’s Latin Grill, and in Santa Barbara at Coastal Winery.

His live music is influenced by everything from classical, jazz, folk, rock, and blues to music from the Near and Far East. In addition to his ‘fixed’ compositions he loves to improvise, and has found some unique solutions to the problem of performing alone. “I am trying to bring more and more counterpoint into my improvising – it is easy enough to write that sort of thing out, but more challenging to do ad lib.” Marc often employs open tunings, creating a fluid and dynamic bass drone underneath his solo lines. He also uses a digital delay system, creating canons (one line of music ‘copying’ another line) or setting up a call-and-response effect. “As a musician, I love bouncing ideas off of others and in a solo setting I can use some simple technology to transform aspects of myself into the ‘other’ – I send out a ‘call’ and then try to react to it; just the right amount of echo allows things to return a bit, and sometimes the effect can be pretty amazing.”

Marc may be reached by phone at 661-993-2540 or by email at drmarcweber@yahoo.com and his website is www.iowacreativemusic.com.

We’re also learning about Poetry’s vari-
ous forms: Sonnet, Shakespearean
Sonnet, Couplet, Ode, Ballade, Spen-
serian Stanza, Limerick, Free Verse,
Rhyme Royal, Ottava Rima, Epode
among many others.
If you’re out and about, we invite you
to stop in and join us.
The poetry group is coming along at
CCS Family Learning Center. At the
last class, we came up with some in-
spiring and radically different poems.
One of our participants wrote a poem
entitled “speak your mind even if your
voice shakes.”
Did I mention this is a fun and fast
hour? When you get on a roll it’s hard
to stop when our time is up. It hap-
pens every time.

BAKO ARTS's picture

 The Bakersfield Arts scene

The Bakersfield Arts scene is growing.

Nyoka Jameson, president of Bakersfield Emerging Contemporary Arists (BECA) has this to say about Bakersifeld art: "So often I hear things like, 'there is no art scene in Bakersfield' and that is simply not true.

Above: One of the doors to be turned into art on March 5!

There are so many incredibly talented people, but they are spread out all over the place. We want to bring them together, and bring them to the people of Bakersfield." As a way to assimilate the community  BECA and Metro Galleries have come together to make a community art project for local artists to show their skills thus “Opening Doors to the Arts.”

Nyoka describes the doors as, "very thick, heavy wooden doors. Don Martin of Metro Galleries, had saved them and came up with the idea for the project."

Above: One of the doors to be turned into art on March 5!

Each artist was given a door from a historical building in Bakersfield being renovated, like the Padre Hotel, to be made into a new piece of art. What was once useless will now be a beautiful masterpiece.

This challenge may call for bone saws, paintbrushes and maybe some glue. Nyoka said, "Don approached me with the idea for BECA to pick the artists."  Participating artist styles range from soft to detailed; Asian influence to caricature; skulls to peacocks.

The artists are veterans of such art exhibits as Villa Arté, 48 Hour Project, and Burn the Witch. Other artists of BECA who do not have a door of their own to create are making one together.

The fifteen finished doors will be displayed around the Bakersfield arts district on 19th & 20th streets in downtown and in the Wall Street alley for the community to see for free!!  All doors in this exhibit are for sale by silent auction starting at $300.  Portions of the proceeds will benefit local charities.

See you March 5th from 5-8pm in the Arts District during the First Friday artwalk!!

Look for the BECA collaborated Door!

Very cool post BAKO.  I'm eager to see what these doors will look like after the artists are done with them.   I plan on visiting the Burn the Witches exhibit in October as well.  Rock on BECA.

TECH SEMINAR

Have you ever wondered what really goes on “Behind the Scenes”?  Why the audience is moved so much during a play?  A lot of the answer is casting the show right, a good story that captures the audience, and people that are dedicated to the show.

BUT, with out the Technical aspect, it would be a bunch of people on a dark, bare stage with out any background sounds or special effects to help sell the fantasy.

“Dr.’” Doug Jockinsen will be holding a one day technical seminar on Saturday, March 6, 2010.  The seminar will cover:  Scenic Design, Theatrical Lighting, Sound, Costuming, Make-up, Stage Management and Props.

Subtopics will include – Equipment, Materials, Design Steps, Best Practice, and A to Z Examples of each topic.

Each area will be discussed separately, with many template forms and descriptive materials being provided.
Anyone who is curious about the ‘tech’ side of Theatrical production should attend this event.

This is an ALL WELCOMED event for ANYONE.

Contact Doug at douglasjockinsen@sbcglobal.net for more information ot to sin up.

There is no charge for this seminar.
Attendees need only bring a pencil and note paper.
